High Royds Hospital

West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum opened its doors on 8 October 1888. Like many of the great Victorian lunatic asylums, the hospital had a farm as well as bakery, library, butchers, cobblers and dairy. It also had a small railway system that operated until 1951. The hospital closed after nearly 115 years in 2003. Jimmy Savile assaulted a patient here in 1988, during the hospital's centenary celebrations.
